ABOUT LAMBADI / BANJARA

 The Banjara (also Banjari, Bangala, Banjori, Banjuri, Brinjari, Lamani, Lamadi, Lambani, Labhani, Lambara, Lavani, Lemadi, Lumadale, Labhani Muka, Gohar-Herkeri, Goola, Gurmarti, Gormati, Kora, Sugali, Sukali, Tanda, Vanjari, Wanji) are a community in India spread in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and other states of India. About half their number speaks Lambadi, one of the Rajasthani dialects of Hindustani, while others are native speakers of Hindi, Telugu and other languages dominant in their respective areas of settlement. They are a Scheduled Tribe in Andhra Pradesh (where they are listed as Sugali) and Orissa, a Scheduled Caste in Karnataka, Haryana, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh.

The Lambadis are a large picturesque tribe who is found throughout Deccan though most of  them are found in Andhra Pradesh, especially in Telangana. They are also called Banjaras and  Sugalis. They are tall, fair complexioned, have aquiline noses and classical Nordic features. They are good agriculturist and excellent cattle breeders. They served as the commisariat of the Moghul armies. Lambadi women wear heavy cumbersome ornaments, and beautifully coloured garments decorated with pieces of stone, cowries and bits of mirror glass, the last of which is becoming the rage of fashionable women all over the country. A model of a Lambadi woman with her picturesque dress and ornaments is one of the most attractive exhibits of the Museum

Dress

Women are known to wear colorful and beautiful costumes and have tattoos on their hands.The dress is considered fancy and attractive by Western cultures. They use mirror chips and often coins to decorate it. Women put on thick bangles on their arms [PATLI].Their ornaments are made up of silver rings, coins,chain and hair pleat are tied together at the end by CHOTLA.

               Men wear Dhoti and Kurta [short with many folds]. These clothes were designed specially for the protection from harsh climate in deserts and to distinguish them from others.

Food

The traditional food of Lambadis is Bati which is Roti.Daliya is a dish cooked using many cereal[wheat,jawar].Banjara people are very much fascinated about non-vegetarian food. SOLAI is non-vegetarian dish made exclusively by Banjara people.They prefer eating spicy food.
